Remembering....

Today has always been a special day for me.

It is the anniversary of my grandfather's birth.

95 years ago today.

(Isabel, Nathaniel, Grampy, Lucas and Julianne)
This is the first year that he is not here with us to celebrate.

WITH CATHERINE ON HIS 93RD BIRTHDAY
FEB 6, 2009
So I thought I would celebrate anyway.

Grampy was a wonderful man. A perfect example of a gentleman. I like to think some part of him continues on in me. My mom says I do some things just like him. I like that.

On my visit to my mom's last week, I showed her my garden notebook and my current plans for this year's garden. She started laughing and said I am just like him - my notebook looks just like the plans he used to make for his garden (which was so impressive, it made the local paper one year - complete with a very large article.). That was one of the nicest things she has said to me.

No matter what my sister, brother and I did, he was always there with a phone call and encouragement.

May 2011
Memorial Family Get-Together for Grampy's Family
We gathered from all over the states for the first time in a very long time!
2 Children with Spouses
6 Grandchildren with spouses
9 Great-Grandchildren

His brain always amazed me - he was super-duper scary smart. My children like to tell people that he invented the pop-rivet gun, glue gun and soda-pop 'pop-tops' And he did. Like I said, scary smart.

I never heard him say anything not nice.

WITH HIS CHRISTMAS TIE
HE WORE THIS TIE EVERY CHRISTMAS!

I never heard him raise his voice.

I watched him love my Nana.

THANKSGIVING 2005
2 WEEKS BEFORE NANA DIED
3 WEEKS BEFORE THEIR 60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
When I grow up, I want to be just like him.

I thnk this is the last picture I have of the two of us

I love you, Grampy.
Happy Birthday

  2. What a lovely tribute to your grandfather! I lost my grandma ("Baba") just before her 95th b-day -- this year she will have turned 100. We're planning a small family celebration in her honor. :)

    Blessings, ~Lisa
