A Greenhouse Update

It has been a while since I have had a chance (or even the oomph) to post here. Lots of stuff going on here though. I will attempt to catch up, but there are no guarantees.

First up: the greenhouse.

The last garden post just had the outline of the greenhouse.

Here is the finished result:

TILLING THE SPACE

GETTING THE FRAME ALL SET

BEING GOOFY

AND NOW: THE COVERING

A WONDERFUL HELPER: ALMOST DONE

ME! ME! ME!

INSIDE THE FINISHED GREENHOUSE: COMPLETE
WITH A ZIPPER ENTRANCE AND EVERYTHING!

THE FINISHED GREENHOUSE
And the best thing: It managed to survive Hurricane Sandy with no damage at all! Oh, my husband is so talented!

A Sort-of Final Garden Update

I say sort-of because I might get some more garden stuff in a bit.

The Update Part:
We have pulled all the stuff from the garden. We had a hard frost 2 weeks ago and whatever was left died a quick death. Frank cleaned out the chicken pen for the winter and he spread the chicken poo from the last clean out and this one on the 4 big beds.

Here is a picture from about a month ago with the final pickings:

All in all I was pretty please with our harvest this year. We didnt' get as much squash as we would have liked, but we are planning to till the back yard for a larger squash/pumpkin patch for next year.

The Sort-of Part:
As I have been perusing various cold-weather gardening books and harvest saving books, I became enamored with the idea of putting in a small 'greenhouse' of some sort (one that was mainly cheap to build) in order the extend the growing season a bit.

I was chatting with Frank a bit before leaving for the dentist yesterday and asked him about moving the wood pile to a new spot (talk about work!) and tilling the back yard and building a small greenhouse to do some quick fall planting. We were discussing all this and he thought we could put something over a couple of the beds behind the house so it would be easy to get to in the cold (always thinking of my comfort, that man!)

I got back from the dentist after an hour of drilling and fixing the broken filling and discovered this:

I should have known this would happen.

While I was gone, Frank went online and discovered the cost of greenhouse kits; figured he was smart enough to make one himself and found a you-tube video showing a hoop house build. Off he and the boys went to Home Depot and voila! I got the start of a greenhouse.

After this picture was taken he put up the first frame for the roof and we discovered that it was about 10 feet high and completely covered the window to the kitchen.

We did some measuring and Frank cut down the sides and now I have the beginning of a new greenhouse! He made it removable and movable so we can put it up in a differnent location next Spring or Fall if this one doesn't work out.

My boys!

going to till the boxes today and put on the covering

just because the plant cage was there!
Hopefully we can get some lettuce in there for some delicious winter salads!

A New Start?

A test of sorts.....  I think I'm going to try something old-new.  It has been too many years since my last post. The world's differ...
