It took us 3 weeks to get this far. We are slow. Most people, I think, would be able to do this in less than one week. Oh well - we are special!
We started with:
Hawai'i.
It is actually not specifically a location to stop at on the Sonlight Schedule, but I figured it was the US and we should start there! (So technically, that leaves us already behind the schedule by 3 weeks - gonna be a long year!)
We read the great Sleeping Bear Press book:
A is for Aloha, an Alphabet book on Hawai'i:
We made salt-dough (2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 cup water: mix and enjoy!). The kiddos then created a 3-D map of Hawaii:

And a few days later, Isabel made muffins for breakfast. She turned on the oven to preheat it. We forgot we left the Hawaiian Islands in the oven. They got a little brown!
of course they do look more like volcanoes now!
Because Mom had to run some errands one day, and the kiddos had to do something educational, we compromised with watching 'Lilo and Stitch'. Of course the extras had a great tour of the islands and a hula lesson!.
We also got a bunch of other books on Hawai'i from the library to pour over.
We finally got around to painting and labeling the Hawaiian Islands; well except Julianne who is on the couch sick: How do my children rest in these strange positions?
The kiddos got to paint the islands and the surrounding area. Then they had to label the big stuff on their maps....

Off to study up on volcanoes and some more Pacific Islands.....
I love the maps! I'm going to have to remember this for the next time we head through the Eastern Hemisphere. It's such a great core! What wonderful books and projects. Don't worry, we were really slow too but my kids remember our year touring the world with great fondness. My only regret is that Africa got slighted. We'll have to start there next time.
